     WHEREAS, Wanda McAlister was selected by the State Games of Mississippi to represent the 2001 State Games as the BellSouth Female Sportsman of the Year; and

     WHEREAS, the award seeks to honor those athletes who personify the ideals of the State Games movement, such as participation, sportsmanship, achievement, effort and positive attitude; and

     WHEREAS, the tenth annual State Games of Mississippi was an impressive success with many great athletes from all areas of Mississippi competing in 24 sports in Lauderdale and Newton counties, and in the central ceremonies at Rae Stadium in Meridian, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, Wanda has been engaged in the State Games of Mississippi equestrian event for two years, making her first appearance in 2000 in the Dressage competition; and

     WHEREAS, in the 2001 State Games of Mississippi, Wanda finished with a gold medal in her age division in the Training Level competition; and

     WHEREAS, Wanda is actively engaged in equestrian, having trained her first pony at the age of six and competing in many equestrian events ever since; and

     WHEREAS, Wanda has a deep passion for sports and  participates for the shear joy, positive influence, sense of accomplishment and character building in a spirit of competition; and

     WHEREAS, Wanda exhibits tremendous sportsmanship and congeniality toward all participants in the events in which she competes; and

     WHEREAS, the BellSouth Sportsman of the Year award honors the foremost male and female sportsman of the year who represent the true spirit of competition; and

     WHEREAS, Wanda was selected Female Sportsman of the Year not only for her athletic accomplishments, but also for her exemplary sportsmanship; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize the achievements of this student athlete, whose competitive spirit brings honor to her school, her community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Wanda McAlister, the 2001 State Games Female Sportsman of the Year, and wish her continued success in her future scholastic and athletic endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to Wanda and her family and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
