A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING THE MISSISSIPPI DEPARTMENT OF ARCHIVES AND HISTORY ON ITS CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION.
WHEREAS, the Mississippi Department of Archives and History celebrates its Centennial in 2002; and
WHEREAS, as the second oldest Department of Archives and History in the Nation, the Mississippi Department was established on February 26, 1902, by an act of the Mississippi Legislature; and
WHEREAS, in creating the Department of Archives and History, the Legislature provided that the department would be governed by a nonpolitical board of trustees; and
WHEREAS, this nonpartisan board has guided the department for the past century with wisdom and integrity; and
WHEREAS, the department, which has been led by only five directors in 100 years, has benefited also from its staff's professionalism, stability and continuity; and
WHEREAS, the department administers programs that in most states are performed by two and sometimes three separate agencies; and
WHEREAS, the department is widely recognized as being one of the most effective state historical agencies in the country; and
WHEREAS, throughout its 100 years of service to the people of Mississippi, the Department of Archives and History has earned distinction for its integrity and professionalism; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend excellence in such distinguished institutions as the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, which has successfully endeavored to preserve the rich and unique history of our citizens and beloved state:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby congratulate the Mississippi Department of Archives and History on the celebration of its Centennial in 2002 and commend the department on its outstanding service to the people of Mississippi.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the Director of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, its board of trustees and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
