AN ACT TO REQUIRE MALE APPLICANTS BETWEEN EIGHTEEN AND TWENTY-SIX YEARS OF AGE WHO APPLY FOR A REGULAR DRIVER'S LICENSE OR PERMIT, A COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE OR PERMIT, AN IDENTIFICATION CARD ISSUED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY, OR FOR RENEWAL OF ANY SUCH LICENSE, PERMIT OR IDENTIFICATION CARD, TO REGISTER IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE MILITARY SELECTIVE SERVICE OR TO PERMIT THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY TO FORWARD TO THE SELECTIVE SERVICE SYSTEM THE NECESSARY INFORMATION FOR REGISTRATION OF THE APPLICANT WITH THE SELECTIVE SERVICE SYSTEM; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:
SECTION 1. The following shall be codified as Section 63-1-22, Mississippi Code of 1972:
63-1-22. (1) Every male United States citizen or immigrant who applies for a temporary driving permit, intermediate license or license under the provisions of this article, or for renewal of any such permit or license, and who is between the ages of eighteen (18) years and twenty-six (26) years, must be registered in compliance with the requirements of the Military Selective Service Act (50 USCS Appx. Section 451 et seq., as amended).
(2) The applicant's signature on the permit or license application shall serve as an indication that the applicant either has already registered with the Selective Service System or that he is authorizing the Department of Public Safety to forward to the Selective Service System the necessary information for such registration. Upon receipt of an application of a person described in subsection (1) of this section, the department shall forward, in an electronic format, the necessary personal information of the applicant to the Selective Service System and shall notify the applicant at the time of application that his signature constitutes consent to registration with the Selective Service System if the applicant is not already registered.
SECTION 2. The following shall be codified as Section 63-1-81.1, Mississippi Code of 1972:
63-1-81.1. (1) Every male United States citizen or immigrant who applies for a commercial driver instruction permit or a commercial driver's license under the provisions of this article, or for renewal of any such permit or license, and who is between the ages of eighteen (18) years and twenty-six (26) years, must be registered in compliance with the requirements of the Military Selective Service Act (50 USCS Appx. Section 451 et seq., as amended).
(2) The applicant's signature on the permit or license application shall serve as an indication that the applicant either has already registered with the Selective Service System or that he is authorizing the Department of Public Safety to forward to the Selective Service System the necessary information for such registration. Upon receipt of an application of a person described in subsection (1) of this section, the department shall forward, in an electronic format, the necessary personal information of the applicant to the Selective Service System and shall notify the applicant at the time of application that his signature constitutes consent to registration with the Selective Service System if the applicant is not already registered.
SECTION 3. The following shall be codified as Section 45-35-10, Mississippi Code of 1972:
45-35-10. (1) Every male United States citizen or immigrant who applies for an identification card under the provisions of this chapter, or for renewal of any such identification card, and who is between the ages of eighteen (18) years and twenty-six (26) years, must be registered in compliance with the requirements of the Military Selective Service Act (50 USCS Appx. Section 451 et seq., as amended).
(2) The applicant's signature on the identification card application shall serve as an indication that the applicant either has already registered with the Selective Service System or that he is authorizing the Department of Public Safety to forward to the Selective Service System the necessary information for such registration. Upon receipt of an application of a person described in subsection (1) of this section, the department shall forward, in an electronic format, the necessary personal information of the applicant to the Selective Service System and shall notify the applicant at the time of application that his signature constitutes consent to registration with the Selective Service System if the applicant is not already registered.
SECTION 4. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2002.
