House Resolution 17

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF JAMES OTHA TRIMM AND EXPRESSING OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS UPON HIS PASSING.

WHEREAS, Mr. James Otha Trimm, a native of Leland, Mississippi, departed this life on March 4, 2001, causing a great loss to his family and friends; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Trimm, the fifth child of the late Samuel and Lena Mae Trimm, was born on March 11, 1924; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Trimm accepted Christ at an early age and served faithfully in St. James A.M.E. Church as a member of the Steward Board and former President of the Trustee Board; and

WHEREAS, after graduating from high school, Mr. Trimm furthered his education at Alcorn State University and received a master's degree from Jackson State University; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Trimm was a devoted patriot to his country as he served the United States Army during World War II; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Trimm demonstrated his outstanding leadership qualities and sincere concern for his community serving 19 years as Principal of B.L. Bell Elementary School; two years as Director of Head Start; 16 years as Title I, ESEA Coordinator for the Leland Consolidated School District and retired in 1986 as an Administrative Assistant and Director of Federal Programs for Leland Consolidated School District; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Trimm's desire to improve the quality of life for the people of his community was evidenced by his participation in numerous civic organizations including the Delta Kappa Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity; Epsilon Xi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity; Board of Trustees for the Witte Memorial Hospital; Board of Trustees for the Delta Regional Medical Center; Leland City Election Commission; City of Leland Democratic Executive Committee; Leland Homecoming Club; Washington County United Way and many others; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Trimm is survived by his lovely wife of 46 years, the former Jacquelyn Bryant; two children, Valerie and Sherman; three grandchildren, Erika, Marcus and Lauren; and a host of other relatives; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize outstanding Mississippians such as Mr. Trimm, who devoted his life to community service and the education of our young people:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the life and accomplishments of Mr. James Otha Trimm and express our deepest sympathy to his family and friends upon his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Mr. James Otha Trimm and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
