AN ACT TO PROHIBIT THE USE OR POSSESSION OF CERTAIN PRODUCTS CONTAINING STRYCHNINE; TO PROVIDE PENALTIES FOR VIOLATIONS OF THIS ACT; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:
SECTION 1. (1) No person shall use or possess any alkaloid product derived from the nux vomica plant also known by the common name strychnine. Nothing herein prevents the use of strychnine by licensed physicians and veterinarians for medicinal purposes.
(2) A person violating subsection (1) of this section is guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, shall be punished by a fine not to exceed One Thousand Dollars ($1,000.00). If such person has also violated the provisions of Section 69-23-1 et seq., or any rules or regulations promulgated thereunder, he is subject to the penalties provided in Section 69-23-29 or Section 69-23-135 in addition to the fine provided in this subsection.
SECTION 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2001.
