Senate Concurrent Resolution 633
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE OF DR. WILLIAM H. LINDLEY AND EXTENDING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY UPON HIS PASSING.
WHEREAS, Dr. William H. Lindley, a Vicksburg veterinarian for 67 years whose life's work provided the basis for the city's Great Animal Adventures Children's Museum, died Sunday, February 20, 2000; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Lindley was born in Asheville, North Carolina, the son of the late Robert Thomas and Luvina Delle Adams Lindley; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Lindley and his family moved to Vicksburg in 1919, and he received his degree in veterinary medicine from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Lindley practiced in Indiana and in Vicksburg before entering the Army Air Corps in 1942 and then founded Vicksburg Animal Hospital in 1946; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Lindley was known throughout the South as an expert in swine production and was one of the most thorough diagnosticians in Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Lindley also served as a preceptor for Mississippi's veterinary medical school and helped many young vet students learn clinical practice to go along with the theory and scientific information they learned in school; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Lindley was a prolific writer and contributed to scientific journals, was the author of four books and many poems and wrote many letters to the editor for The Vicksburg Post; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Lindley was a member of the Trail Dusters and Vicksburg riding clubs, Living with Cancer, Vicksburg Humane Society and the Vicksburg Rotary Club; and
WHEREAS, in the later years of his life, Dr. Lindley began collecting artifacts, teaching materials and other items dealing with veterinary medicine and the contributions animals have made to human well-being and human health; and
WHEREAS, that collection formed the basis of what is now the Great Animal Adventures Children's Museum in Vicksburg; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Lindley's honors included Veterinarian of the Year and serving in every office of the Mississippi State Veterinary Association, including president; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Lindley was married to the former Olga Jarvis for 55 years, until her death in 1992; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Lindley is survived by two daughters, Suzanne L. Williamson and Markie Lindley, two grandsons, Mark R. Williamson and Todd L. Williamson, and a son-in-law, Billy Williamson; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the Legislature to recognize and pay special tribute to outstanding Mississippians such as Dr. Lindley whose contributions in life made such an impact on his community:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the life of Dr. William H. Lindley and extend deepest sympathy to his family upon his passing.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. William H. Lindley and the Great Animal Adventures Children's Museum and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
