A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION TO COMMEND JERRY A. OAKES UPON HIS RETIREMENT AS DIRECTOR OF THE BUREAU OF BUILDING, GROUNDS AND REAL PROPERTY MANAGEMENT, DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE AND ADMINISTRATION.
WHEREAS, Jerry A. Oakes, a native of Jackson, Mississippi, has recently retired as Director of the Bureau of Building, Grounds and Real Property Management, Department of Finance and Administration; and
WHEREAS, in 1959, Jerry Oakes began his career as a draftsman for Biggs, Weir and Chandler, Architects & Engineers, in Jackson, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, Jerry Oakes continued his work in the private sector by working for William R. Henry, Jr., Architect, (Architect/Draftsman, 1960-1966); Charles G. Mitchell, Architect, (Architect, 1966-1969); and Mitchell & Oakes Architects (Partner, 1970-1977); and
WHEREAS, in 1978, Jerry Oakes accepted the position of Chief Architect/Assistant Director of the Bureau of Building, Grounds and Real Property Management, and in 1992, he was promoted to Director of the Bureau of Building, Grounds and Real Property Management; and
WHEREAS, throughout his tenure as director, Jerry Oakes has been responsible for the construction of numerous state government buildings and the renovation of many others; and
WHEREAS, Jerry A. Oakes holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama, and maintains several professional certifications, such as Registered Architect, State of Mississippi (1964-present); Member of American Institute of Architects (1959-present); Member of Construction Specification Institute (1967-present); and Southeastern States Conference on Capital Outlay & Construction Administrators (1979-present); and
WHEREAS, Jerry Oakes is a retired Captain in the United States Army Corps of Engineers (1965); served in the 926th Engineer Construction Battalion, Berlin Crisis (1961-1962); served in the 17th Engineering Battalion, Second Armored Division (1957-1959); and was a Commissioned Second Lieutenant (1957); and
WHEREAS, Jerry Oakes and his wife, Jane, have three children and two grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, the Legislature finds it most appropriate to pay special tribute to such an outstanding citizen as Jerry Oakes, whose dedication and loyalty to state government has brought many contributions to this state:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend Jerry A. Oakes upon his retirement as Director of Bureau of Building, Grounds and Real Property Management, Department of Finance and Administration, and wish him continued success in his future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Jerry Oakes and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
