A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION TO COMMEND LORI FLOOD, 1999-2000 TEACHER OF THE YEAR FOR JACKSON PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
WHEREAS, Lori Flood is a third grade teacher at McLeod Elementary School in Jackson, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, on Wednesday, February 9, 2000, Flood was one of three Jackson Public Schools' teachers in the House of Representatives gallery who were singled out by Governor Ronnie Musgrove during his State of the State address to the Mississippi Legislature for having obtained National Board Certification; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Flood has been teaching in Jackson Public Schools for ten years; and
WHEREAS, she holds the degree of bachelor of science in elementary education from Mississippi State University and has done additional classwork at Mississippi College; and
WHEREAS, in November of 1999 she was awarded certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards; and
WHEREAS, she encourages other teachers in JPS and Mississippi to seek this certification and is currently mentoring eight teachers who are pursuing national certification; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Flood attributes some of her choice of career to her father, who is an educator and who has always been a strong force in her life; she says that it was he who inspired her to become a teacher, not because he said it was a great profession, but because of the way he himself was a teacher to her; and
WHEREAS, she takes her role as an educator very seriously, striving to meet the individual needs of every student that she teaches; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Flood develops a personal relationship with each child and each child's family so that she may understand the individual needs of her students and so that she can develop teaching strategies that maximize each child's achievements; and
WHEREAS, she is married to David D. Flood and is the mother of Jessica, Cody and Callie-Ann Flood; and
WHEREAS, she is a member of the McLeod P.T.A., the Alpha Delta Kappa honorary teacher sorority, Phi Kappa Phi educational fraternity, and the Mississippi Association of Children Under Six; and
WHEREAS, she has been honored to receive Jackson Junior League teacher grants each year beginning in 1996 to the present; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize great accomplishments such as this, especially the accomplishments of those who work with youth, who are the future of this great state:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize and commend Ms. Lori Flood upon the occasion of her honor of being named Teacher of the Year for Jackson Public Schools, and congratulate her upon this achievement.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be presented to Ms. Flood and to Cheryl Stone, the Principal of McLeod Elementary.
