A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING MRS. CHRISTINE MAGEE UPON BEING SELECTED AS THE NATIONAL ADULT LEARNER OF 1999.
WHEREAS, Mrs. Christine Magee received the National Adult Learner of 1999 Award on October 15, 1999, in San Antonio, Texas; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Magee, who dropped out of high school at the age of 17, married and had a son, always planned to return to school and get her diploma; and
WHEREAS, after working hard for six years, Mrs. Magee was laid off from her job from a company who closed its doors; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Magee learned of the JTPA Title III Dislocated Workers funds through a rapid response team that came to the plant before it closed; and
WHEREAS, at age 49, Mrs. Magee enrolled at the Rankin Program for Adult Learners, where she passed the GED test with honors in November 1995; and
WHEREAS, furthering her education, Mrs. Magee enrolled in Hinds Community College in January 1996 and graduated with honors and a double major in Travel Tourism Management and Hotel Restaurant Management; and
WHEREAS, while earning her degree, Mrs. Magee worked part time in a floral shop and grocery store and interned with the Mississippi Department of Tourism and the Fairview Inn Bed and Breakfast in Jackson; and
WHEREAS, although Mrs. Magee was busy balancing her family, school and several jobs, she took time to speak to adult students, encouraging them to take advantage of the adult education programs that were available in their areas; and
WHEREAS, in 1998, Mrs. Magee was chosen by the Central Mississippi Planning and Development District as the 1998 Rankin County JTPA Alumni Award Winner; and
WHEREAS, in January 1999, Mrs. Magee became an associate manager trainee with the Mississippi Department of Tourism bringing state and national groups into convention centers around the state; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend excellence of outstanding Mississippians such as Mrs. Magee:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Mrs. Christine Magee upon receiving the National Adult Learner of 1999 Award on October 15, 1999, in San Antonio, Texas, and extend our heartiest wishes for success in all her future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mrs. Christine Magee and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
