A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE OF MR. WILLIAM ALBERT "TOM" HOLMES AND EXTEND OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY UPON HIS PASSING.
WHEREAS, Mr. William Albert "Tom" Holmes, departed this life on Sunday, December 26, 1999, causing great loss to his family and friends; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Holmes, son of the late Will Holmes and Rosetta Jones Holmes, was born on October 19, 1940, in Panola County, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, after graduating from South Panola High School, Mr. Holmes attended Natchez Jr. College, earning an Associate Arts Degree in Education; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Holmes was dedicated to his country as he served in the United States Army in 1964, receiving an honorable discharge in 1966, and served in the Army Reserve and the Mississippi National Guard; and
WHEREAS, an active member of his community, Mr. Holmes was a former member and secretary of Liberty Hill Missionary Baptist Church; a member, former Chairman of the Steward Board, former Chairman of the Trustee Board and Financial Secretary of Union Hill C.M.E. Church; Vice President of the Water Valley Chapter of the NAACP and former Scoutmaster of Troop #250; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Holmes received several awards and honors, including the Mississippi Accommodation Medal in 1983, the Army Accommodation Medal in 1984 and was promoted to Staff Sergeant and Section Chief in the Mississippi National Guard; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Holmes is survived by his lovely wife, the former Florine Baker, eight children, 18 grandchildren, one great grandchild and a host of other relatives:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the life of Mr. William Albert "Tom" Holmes and extend our deepest sympathy to his family and friends upon his passing.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Mr. William Albert "Tom" Holmes and to members of the Capitol Press Corps.
