A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE MISSISSIPPI SPORTS HALL OF FAME FOR COMMEMORATING THE NATIONAL WOMEN IN SPORTS DAY ON FEBRUARY 4, 2000.

WHEREAS, the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum will celebrate National Women in Sports Day on February 4, 2000; and

WHEREAS, National Women in Sports Day is a day set aside for girls and women to celebrate their participation in sports and fitness; and

WHEREAS, in Mississippi, an estimated 48,000 middle and high school girls are participating in Mississippi public school athletics during the current academic year; and

WHEREAS, thousands of Mississippi's females participate in sports on the college and professional levels, making sports and fitness a part of their everyday schedule; and

WHEREAS, the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum is celebrating National Women in Sports Day in Mississippi to encourage females of all ages to be involved in sports activities and to recognize the positive influences that participation in sports and good sportsmanship have in the lives of all Mississippians; and

WHEREAS, during this time, the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum is honoring the female members of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame; and

WHEREAS, Katie Hester, the first female President of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, has invited Robin Roberts and Gabrielle Reece to celebrate National Women in Sports Day and to raise funds for the operation of the Sports Hall of Fame and Museum; and

WHEREAS, the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum is a private, nonprofit foundation which presents one of Mississippi's greatest success stories to people of all ages and backgrounds; and

WHEREAS, the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame is a museum designed to showcase the history and heroes of Mississippi sports who have participated in amateur and professional sports including, golf, tennis, football, baseball, boxing, basketball, track and field, swimming and sports journalism; and

WHEREAS, the museum provides educational programs in the areas of sports careers, sports history, good sportsmanship and sports skills, and it showcases the outstanding talents of fellow citizens which generate an incredible sense of State pride:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commemorate the celebration of National Women in Sports Day on February 4, 2000, at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, President Katie Hester and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
