A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING MR. JOHN E. MCKINNON FOR HIS OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO HIS COUNTRY DURING WORLD WAR II.

WHEREAS, Mr. John E. McKinnon, a native of Tennessee, joined the Marines and faithfully served his country during World War II; and

WHEREAS, having been promoted to Corporal and assigned as a squad leader, Mr. McKinnon was instructed to give a platoon of recruits advanced combat training; and

WHEREAS, following the training, Mr. McKinnon spent time battling in Samoa, the island of Eniwetok, Guam, and Iwo Jima, where he was severely wounded in his right leg; and

WHEREAS, after his discharge on September 26, 1945, Mr. McKinnon attended Miller-Hawking Business College, where he completed a number of courses, including two years of accounting; and

WHEREAS, Mr. McKinnon worked for Lykes Brothers Steamship Company, then at Memphis Equipment Company, where he worked for 35 years before retiring as assistant secretary-treasurer; and

WHEREAS, an active member of his community, Mr. McKinnon is an elder, treasurer and general manager of Oakland Presbyterian Church, active with the Third Marine Division Association, a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, a Mason, a Shriner, a charter member of the state charter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart and a member of the 2000 Club of Iwo Jima Veterans; and

WHEREAS, Mr. McKinnon has been lovingly supported in his endeavors by his wife, Sara, and his children and grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the Legislature of the State of Mississippi to commend excellence and bravery of World War II veterans such as Mr. John McKinnon:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend Mr. John McKinnon for his outstanding service to his country during World War II and extend to him our heartiest wishes for success in all his future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. John McKinnon and to members of the Capitol Press Corps.
