House Concurrent Resolution 127
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING REGISTERED PROFESSIONAL NURSES FOR 100 YEARS OF PROFESSIONAL NURSING IN MISSISSIPPI.
WHEREAS, there are approximately 28,000 registered professional nurses licensed in the State of Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, these registered professional nurses are employed in a variety of health care settings such as hospitals, home health agencies, physicians' offices, clinics, schools, long-term care facilities, renal dialysis centers, ambulatory surgical centers, schools of nursing, public health departments, hospices and industries; and
WHEREAS, professional nursing began with the first hospital school of nursing in Natchez, Mississippi, in 1898 and today, the State of Mississippi has 15 associate degree nursing programs, six baccalaureate degree programs, five master's degree programs, and one doctoral program and there are five advanced nursing degree (nurse practitioner) programs; and
WHEREAS, the nurses who have graduated from these educational programs have provided health care services to the citizens of the state from the first graduating class in 1901 to the present time; and
WHEREAS, the care that these nurses provide promotes the health and well-being of all citizens of the state; and
WHEREAS, the Mississippi Nurses' Association, along with 24 other nursing specialty organizations, has designated 1998 as the year to celebrate 100 years of professional nursing in Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, the Legislature of the State of Mississippi finds it most appropriate to pay special tribute to professional organizations such as the Mississippi Nurses Association and to the registered nurses around the state for their devoted service to their profession:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we commend the registered professional nurses in the state for their dedication to improving the health of the citizens of the State of Mississippi and proclaim 1998 as the Centennial Year for Professional Nursing in Mississippi.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the Mississippi Nurses Association and the Capitol Press Corps.
