A RESOLUTION COMMENDING LEANN RIMES FOR HER PHENOMENAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY AND FOR WINNING TWO GRAMMY AWARDS. 

WHEREAS, a native Mississippian, LeAnn Rimes was born in Pearl, Mississippi, and is the daughter of Wilbur and Belinda Rimes; and

WHEREAS, born on August 28, 1982, LeAnn started singing at the tender age of two, made her first public performance singing "Getting to Know You" at age five, and was the champion on Star Search for two weeks in a row by the time she was eight; and

WHEREAS, at the age of 14, LeAnn has been nominated for two Country Music Association Awards; has performed at the Grand Ole Opry; has attended a White House Christmas celebration; and her album, "Blue," has gone triple-platinum in the United States, triple-platinum in Australia, platinum in Canada and gold in England; and

WHEREAS, her sophomore album, "Unchained Melody/The Early Years", debuted at Number 1 on Billboard's pop charts, a feat the hottest rock and rap acts achieve on a regular basis, but one rarely achieved by a country performer; and

WHEREAS, LeAnn recently won two 1996 Grammy Awards, taking the Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance and beating out a slate of more heavily favored rockers to win the highly coveted award for Best New Artist; and

WHEREAS, in March 1997, LeAnn will be going to Australia for a 16-day performance tour; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize the accomplishments of the great citizens of the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we hereby commend and congratulate LeAnn Rimes for her phenomenal accomplishments in the music industry and wish her continued success in all of her future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to LeAnn Rimes and to the Capitol Press Corps.
