Senate Concurrent Resolution 612


WHEREAS, in September, 1985, Dr. Donald W. Zacharias became the fifteenth President of Mississippi State University; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure the university has grown significantly in enrollment, and new levels of private contributions and research activity have been attained; and

WHEREAS, over the years he has distinguished himself as one of this state's most forceful advocates for higher education and has also been prominent in national higher education circles; and

WHEREAS, from the beginning of his career in higher education in 1963 as a faculty member in communication at Indiana University to his present position as the leader of the largest institution of higher learning in Mississippi, he has been staunch in his dedication to public education and its beneficiaries; and

WHEREAS, at Mississippi State University where he has become one of the longest serving presidents in the nearly one hundred twenty year history of the school, he is held in the highest respect and regarded with the deepest affection; and

WHEREAS, he has announced his retirement as president to become effective in January, 1998:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we hereby express our profound appreciation to Dr. Donald W. Zacharias for his exceptional service to Mississippi State University and to the field of higher education, and we extend to him our heartfelt wishes for the best as he leaves the helm of that university which is today vibrant with the physical and intellectual manifestations of his strong leadership.
