A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE NEWTON COUNTY ACADEMY GENERALS BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM UPON CAPTURING THE CLASS "A" STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, the Newton County Academy Generals Boys Basketball Team are the Class "A" State Basketball champions; and
WHEREAS, the Newton County Academy Generals posted an impressive record of 27 wins and only 3 losses; and
WHEREAS, in route to the state championship, the Generals captured the District 3-A Championship and the Central State Championship; and
WHEREAS, the Generals exhibited the determination and discipline and never-say-die attitude that is characteristic of champions; and
WHEREAS, the Generals fought with a tenacity of a team that would not be denied; and
WHEREAS, the members of the team are: Jason Cleveland, William Hodges, Toby Pinson, Daniel Munn, Jason Williams, Jonathon McDonald, Skip Stamper, Kerry Myers, Jay Mehta, Bryan Hamil, Matthew Roebuck, Jay Jones, Stephen Liggett and J. Paul Everett; and
WHEREAS, the Generals were led by all-district and all-state tournament team players Matthew Roebuck and Jason Cleveland, and MPSA high school all-star, all-state tournament and all-district player, Jay Jones; and
WHEREAS, the Generals were molded into a juggernaut by legendary Coach Coyte Vance; and
WHEREAS, in addition to their athletic prowess, the Generals have excelled at Newton County Academy, an institution known for its academic excellence; and
WHEREAS, the championship season of the Generals is especially memorable because of the commendable sportsmanship shown by this outstanding group of young men; and
WHEREAS, the storied season of the Generals will be the benchmark against which all future Generals will be measured:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MISSISSIPPI STATE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Newton County Academy Generals Boys Basketball Team for its 1996-1997 championship season and wish them success in their endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to the Newton County Academy Generals Boys Basketball Team.
