Senate Concurrent Resolution 571

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING ODE BURRELL UPON HIS INDUCTION INTO THE MISSISSIPPI SPORTS HALL OF FAME. 

WHEREAS, Ode Burrell is a 1997 inductee into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame; and

WHEREAS, Ode Burrell is a native of Durant, Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, Ode Burrell was All-Conference in football 

(4 years), track (4 years), baseball (2 years), and basketball

(2 years) while in high school; and

WHEREAS, Ode Burrell won the state 100 and 220-yard dashes while in high school; and

WHEREAS, Ode Burrell won the 220-yard dash in the state junior college track championship; and

WHEREAS, Ode Burrell was a Junior College All-American when he played for Holmes Junior College; and

WHEREAS, Ode Burrell was the leading rusher, punter, and punt and kickoff returner for the Mississippi State Bulldogs in 1962-1963; and

WHEREAS, Ode Burrell was named to the Coaches All-American Team and was named All-SEC while at Mississippi State; and

WHEREAS, Ode Burrell led the MSU Bulldogs to a 16-12 victory over North Carolina State in the 1963 Liberty Bowl; and

WHEREAS, Ode Burrell was selected Most Valuable Player in the Liberty Bowl, the Blue-Gray and the Senior Bowl All-Star games; and

WHEREAS, Ode Burrell was drafted by the Green Bay Packers and the Houston Oilers; and

WHEREAS, in his first pro football game with the Oilers, Ode Burrell ran a kickoff back 93 yards for a touchdown; and

WHEREAS, he was among the top 5 players in rushing and pass receiving in 1967; and

WHEREAS, Ode Burrell was named team Most Valuable Player in

1967; and

WHEREAS, Ode Burrell played in the 1968 Pro Bowl; and

WHEREAS, after his professional football career, Ode Burrell joined the coaching ranks; and

WHEREAS, Ode Burrell has had an outstanding high school and junior college coaching career:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MISSISSIPPI SENATE, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Ode Burrell upon his induction into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and wish him continued success in his endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to Ode Burrell.
