A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING DR. JEAN SIMMONS UPON HER RECEIPT OF THE 1997 ARTS EDUCATION AWARD OF THE GOVERNOR'S AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN THE ARTS. 

WHEREAS, Dr. Jean Simmons has been the driving force behind the creation of the Performing Arts Division of the Jackson Public Schools' Academic and Performing Arts Complex (APAC), a unique gifted and talented program in this state that engages children daily in the arts; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Simmons has served as the Performing Arts Coordinator since the opening of APAC in 1982, overseeing its highly specialized programs in dance, music, theatre and the visual arts; and

WHEREAS, APAC faculty members are working professionals in the arts community, and the school has strong ties to the International Ballet Competition, the Mississippi Museum of Art and New Stage Theatre; and

WHEREAS, the exceptional visual and performing arts curricula of the school prepare students for a career in the arts if they so choose; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Simmons has been named as the recipient of the 1997 Arts Education Award of the Governor's Awards for Excellence in the Arts:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we hereby commend Dr. Jean Simmons for her vision, forethought and perseverance in the creation of APAC, and we congratulate her upon being named the recipient of the 1997 Arts Education Award of the Governor's Awards for Excellence in the Arts.
