A HOUSE RESOLUTION COMMENDING DR. T. RUSSELL NUNAN ON HIS NINETIETH BIRTHDAY. 

WHEREAS, being ordained as a minister in the Presbyterian Church in 1936, Dr. T. Russell Nunan has been an active and dedicated minister for 67 years; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Nunan received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Davidson College, Davidson, North Carolina, in 1930; he received a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky, in 1936; he was a Fellow at the Yale School of Alcohol Studies, New Haven, Connecticut, in 1948; and he received an Honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Belhaven College, Jackson, Mississippi, in 1958; and

WHEREAS, being a dedicated pastor, Dr. Nunan has served as a pastor for numerous churches such as the Roswell Presbyterian Church, Roswell Georgia; Barnett Memorial Church, Pittsburg Mission, Atlanta, Georgia; Porterdale Presbyterian Church, Porterdale, Georgia; Berean Center, New Orleans, Louisiana; Napoleon Avenue Presbyterian Church, New Orleans, Louisiana; First Presbyterian Church, Greenville, Mississippi, 1946-1960; First Presbyterian Church, Montgomery, Alabama, 1960-1965; Bethel Presbyterian Church, Benoit, Mississippi, 1972 - present; and Rosedale Presbyterian Church, Rosedale, Mississippi, 1972 - present; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Nunan served as a United States Navy Chaplain in World War II, the Korean War and the Naval Reserve; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Nunan has worked tirelessly with the Mississippi Delta Area Boy and Girl Scouts, serving as an advisory member of the Council as a Cub Pack Master, Scoutmaster, Chaplain at Camp Tallaha in Charleston, Mississippi, and Chairman of the Eagle Board of Review for Washington County, Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, always willing to serve his community, Dr. Nunan serves as a member of the board of directors of the following organizations: French Camp Academy, Mississippi Fire Fighters Memorial Burn Center, Lighthouse Lodge, Mississippi Library Association and the Bessie J. Taylor Home; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Nunan has a deep and abiding philosophical, psychological and political belief in the private enterprise system and he is committed to hard work, discipline, thrift, justice and service to and love of others by individuals rather than the state; and

WHEREAS, with this philosophy in mind, he has been an outstanding leader of men in volunteerism for those in financial, emotional and physical needs; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Nunan led the Committee on French Camp Academy in 1950 to form an endowment fund that began with $25,000.00 and today has $29 millon; and

WHEREAS, French Camp is a school that trains young people in Christian character and develops the habits of initiative and work; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Nunan has counseled tirelessly with individuals who have drug and alcohol problems and in recognition of his work in this area, the center in Greenville, Mississippi, is named the Nunan/Robertson Center; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Nunan has been an example of gentleness and brotherly love and has had an impact on countless lives; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Nunan has been faithful in service to his country, his fellowman and his God:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Dr. T. Russell Nunan on his ninetieth birthday and wish him continued success in all of his future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Dr. T. Russell Nunan and to members of the Capitol Press Corps.
