A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE TUPELO HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMIC DECATHLON TEAM ON WINNING ITS 12TH CONSECUTIVE MISSISSIPPI ACADEMIC DECATHLON CHAMPIONSHIP. 

WHEREAS, the Tupelo High School Academic Decathlon Team won its 12th consecutive Mississippi Academic Decathlon Championship; and

WHEREAS, the Academic Decathlon program is a national academic competition which tests students in speaking, writing, interviewing, science, math, literature, social studies, economics, fine arts and a special area of emphasis each year called Super Quiz; and

WHEREAS, Mississippi began participating in this competition in 1986, and Tupelo High School has won the State Championship each year since its inception; and

WHEREAS, the members of the 1997 Tupelo High School Decathlon Team are Adam Lubin, Adrianne Robertson, Gayle Rogers, Lyle Gravatt, Sarah Robinson, Mitch Soper, Matt Phillips, Josh Robinson and Shannon Wages; and

WHEREAS, excelling individually as well as collectively, Adam Lubin won gold in economics and literature, and silver in social studies and fine arts; Adrianne Robertson won gold in social studies and fine arts, and bronze in math and economics; Gayle Rogers won silver in math, and bronze in social studies, essay and science; Lyle Gravatt won gold in math and science, silver in economics and literature, and bronze in fine arts; Sarah Robinson won gold in essay, silver in speech, and bronze in literature; and Shannon Wages won bronze in interview; and

WHEREAS, all team members placed in the top twenty-five individual scorers at the competition; and

WHEREAS, Gayle Rogers, Adam Lubin, Adrianne Robertson, Lyle Gravatt, Sarah Robinson and Shannon Wages placed in the top ten scorers; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to commend excellence especially when evidenced by the youth of our state, who are its future:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Tupelo High School Academic Decathlon Team on winning its 12th consecutive Mississippi Academic Decathlon Championship and wish them continued success in all of their future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Tupelo High School and to members of the Capitol Press Corps.
