AN ACT TO PROVIDE THAT THE MISSISSIPPI DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION SHALL CONSTRUCT AN ADDITIONAL LANE FOR TRAFFIC ALONG THE EXISTING NORTHBOUND AND SOUTHBOUND LANES OF U.S. HIGHWAY 49 IN RANKIN COUNTY BEGINNING AT FLORENCE AND EXTENDING NORTHERLY TO I-20; TO PROVIDE THAT THE MISSISSIPPI DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION SHALL CONSTRUCT A HIGHWAY SEGMENT IN RANKIN COUNTY CONSISTING OF FOUR LANES BEGINNING AT THE INTERSECTION OF U.S. HIGHWAY 49 AND I-20 AND EXTENDING NORTHERLY TO MISSISSIPPI HIGHWAY 25; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES. 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

SECTION 1. (1) The Mississippi Department of Transportation shall construct an additional lane for traffic along the existing northbound and southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 49 in Rankin County beginning at Florence and extending northerly to I-20, so as to provide three (3) lanes for traffic flowing in each direction.

(2) The Mississippi Department of Transportation shall construct a segment of highway in Rankin County consisting of four lanes, so as to provide two (2) lanes for traffic flowing in each direction, beginning at the intersection of U.S. Highway 49 and I-20 and extending northerly to Mississippi Highway 25. Such highway segment shall be a part of the state highway system and shall be under the jurisdiction of the Mississippi Transportation Commission and the Mississippi Department of Transportation for construction and maintenance.

SECTION 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 1997.
