Senate Resolution 8

A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE SUPPORT FOR THE BETH ISRAEL CONGREGATION BY THE MISSISSIPPI SENATE FOLLOWING THE ARSON ATTACK IN JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI.

WHEREAS, any act of arson is a serious crime, but attacking a house of worship is a particular outrage because it is not merely an attack on a building, it is an attack on the right of individuals to worship as they deem proper; and

WHEREAS, the recent arson at the Beth Israel Congregation on January 10, 2026, in Jackson, Mississippi, brings to mind some of the most tragic events in the history of Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, Governor Tate Reeves said that "Mississippi stands with the members of Beth Israel Congregation; and

WHEREAS, Jackson Mayor John Horhn said that "acts of antisemitism, racism and religious hatred are attacks on Jackson as a whole and will be treated as threats to our residents' safety and freedom to worship.  Targeting people because of their faith, race, ethnicity or sexual orientation is morally wrong, un-American and incompatible with the values of this city":

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we express our full support for the Beth Israel Congregation and for justice following this heinous crime, and offer our sympathy.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be transmitted to the Board of Directors of the Beth Israel Congregation and the Mississippi Commissioner of Public Safety.
