House Resolution 1

A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING MR. HERMAN SMITH FOR OVER 20 YEARS OF OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO THE VICKSBURG BRIDGE COMMISSION AND FLAG RAISING TRADITION.

WHEREAS, Mr. Herman Smith, former Superintendent of the Vicksburg Bridge Commission of Warren County, Mississippi, is being honored for his dedication and service to the Vicksburg Bridge Commission and the flag raising tradition; and

WHEREAS, with his mechanical background, Mr. Smith was in charge of the flag raising ceremonies and the day-to-day operations of the Old Vicksburg Bridge and its related properties; and

WHEREAS, in 2021, Mr. Smith was instrumental in the replacement of the flagpole that sits on top of the center column of the bridge, a truly outstanding accomplishment; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Smith stated that the flag raising has always been an honor to him, especially when he is coming back from Louisiana or when he takes a trip, he looks up to the flag, and he has a lot of memories, and that was one of the biggest high points of his job; and

WHEREAS, during retirement, Mr. Smith plans to oversee the project of his church, Elevate Church, to turn the old Street Clinic Building on McAuley and Grove Streets into a church; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to honor extraordinary Mississippians, especially those such as Mr. Herman Smith, whose dedication and service brings honor to his community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby recognize and commend Mr. Herman Smith for over 20 years of outstanding service to the Vicksburg Bridge Commission and flag raising tradition.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. Herman Smith and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
