A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING SENATOR ANGELA TURNER FORD UPON HER RECEIPT OF THE COALITION ON ADULT BASIC EDUCATION (COABE) 2024 LEGISLATIVE CHAMPION AWARD AND COMMEND HER DISTINGUISHED LEADERSHIP AND SUPPORT FOR ADULT EDUCATION IN MISSISSIPPI.
WHEREAS, we join the Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE) in recognizing a distinguished member of the Mississippi Senate for her leadership in adult education in Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, on September 16, 2024, the Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE) recognized Senator Angela Turner Ford's exceptional support of adult education during National Adult Education and Family Literacy (AEFL) Week. COABE, along with more than 100 national, state, and local partners, celebrated National AEFL Week from September 16 through September 20, 2024; and
WHEREAS, "I applaud Senator Angela Turner Ford, recipient of the Legislative Champion Award, for her outstanding contributions and support of adult education! The prestigious Legislative Champion Award is granted for distinguished leadership and support for adult education," stated Sharon Bonney, CEO of COABE; and
WHEREAS, Senator Angela Turner Ford is a passionate advocate for adult education programs locally and statewide. Her efforts to engage with her Senate and House colleagues are paving the way for continued initiatives in adult education across the state. A shining example of her commitment is her recent role as the Keynote Speaker for East Mississippi Community College's High School Equivalency Commencement Ceremony. Despite her busy schedule, she volunteered to speak and interact with college faculty, staff, and students. Her dedication and support for adult education, in her community and her state, are truly inspiring; and
WHEREAS, Amber Beck, COABE State Advocate for Adult Education Fellow, states, "Senator Ford's support for our adult education program was evident at our first-ever Adult Education Day at the Capitol in March 2024. She was in constant communication with us, offering her assistance and guidance. As we continue to advocate for adult education, we can count on Senator Ford to be available and supportive of adult education programs across the state. Her actions speak volumes about her dedication and the impact she has on our cause"; and
WHEREAS, COABE's mission is to inspire educators so adults succeed and communities thrive. The Coalition on Adult Basic Education exists to provide leadership, communication, professional development, and advocacy for adult education and literacy practitioners to advance quality services for all adult learners. COABE represents the field with over 79,000 adult educators and provides a variety of services, including professional development through annual, state-of-the-art national conferences, more than 50 webinars annually, advocacy and communication, and a peer-reviewed journal; and
WHEREAS, Senator Turner Ford has brought honor to the State of Mississippi through her advocacy of adult education:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby recognize Senator Angela Turner Ford upon her receipt of the Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE) 2024 Legislative Champion Award and commend her distinguished leadership and support for adult education in Mississippi.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Senator Angela Turner Ford, forwarded to the Chief Executive Officer of the Coalition on Adult Basic Education, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
