Senate Resolution 47

A RESOLUTION EXTENDING THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MISSISSIPPI SENATE TO PHILADELPHIA EAGLES, FORMER OLE MISS REBELS AND FORMER STARKVILLE HIGH SCHOOL YELLOW JACKETS WIDE RECEIVER A.J. BROWN FOR HIS OUTSTANDING 2025 SUPERBOWL CHAMPIONSHIP PERFORMANCE.

WHEREAS, as the final seconds ticked off the clock and brought the end to the 2024-2025 NFL season, Philadelphia Eagles, former Ole Miss Rebel and former Starkville High School Yellow Jackets Wide Receiver A.J. Brown realized his lifelong dream of becoming a Super Bowl Champion.  In the Eagles 40-22 rout over the Kansas City Chiefs, Brown brought down three catches for 43 yards, scoring a 12-yard touchdown just before halftime to put Philadelphia up 24-0 heading into the break.  The 27-year-old led the Eagles in receiving with 67 catches, 1,063 yards and seven touchdowns in 13 regular-season games; and

WHEREAS, Ole Miss has produced 20 Super Bowl player titles, as Brown became the 16th former Rebel to win the Super Bowl, and the first wide receiver to win since Willie Green of the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXXIII; and

WHEREAS, A.J. Brown committed to Ole Miss out of Starkville High School in Starkville, Mississippi.  In his time with the Rebels, he tallied 2,984 receiving yards, the most in Ole Miss history.  The Tennessee Titans drafted Brown with the Number 51 pick in the 2019 NFL draft.  After three seasons with Tennessee, he was traded to Philadelphia; and

WHEREAS, in his first two years with the Eagles, Brown topped 1,400 receiving yards both years, earning back-to-back second team All-Pro honors.  Since being traded to Philadelphia, Brown has recorded 4,031 receiving yards, the fourth highest total in the league in that timeframe; and

WHEREAS, in Super Bowl LVII, Brown finished with six catches for 96 yards and a touchdown, a 45-yard grab on the first play of the second quarter.  Despite his efforts, the Eagles lost a close one to the Chiefs, 38-35; and

WHEREAS, in the opening week of the 2024 NFL season, the Eagles had the opportunity to play in the NFL's first game to ever take place in South America.  Philadelphia beat the Green Bay Packers, 34-29, in São Paulo, Brazil; and

WHEREAS, in the wild card and divisional round, the Eagles relied on their ground game, as star running back Saquon Barkley led them to wins over the Packers and Los Angeles Rams.  This would set up a rematch against the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship, the only team to beat the Eagles with A.J. Brown in the regular season.  Offensive Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels led the Commanders, and had just upset the top-seeded Detroit Lions.  Despite this, the Eagles made a statement with a 55-23 win, the highest score by a single team in a conference championship game ever.  Brown caught the only receiving touchdown of the day for the Eagles, one of six catches which resulted in 96 yards; and

WHEREAS, on February 9, 2025, Brown became a Super Bowl Champion for the first time in his career.  The stage was set for one of the most anticipated Super Bowls in recent memory.  Not only was it a rematch of Super Bowl LVII, but the Chiefs had the opportunity to be the first team to win three Super Bowls in a row.  On the other side, the Eagles hadn't lost a single game all year in which Brown and Hurts were both healthy, a perfect 15-0 heading into the Super Bowl; and

WHEREAS, in the second half, the Eagles kept their foot on the pedal, eventually downing the reigning champs, 40-22.  Fittingly, the Eagles superstar duo of receivers, A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith, were the ones who doused Head Coach Nick Sirianni with yellow Gatorade as the game came to a close, giving Brown his first career Super Bowl ring; and

WHEREAS, less than 24 hours after the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 59, Eagles Coach Nick Sirianni was seen wearing a Mississippi high school jersey.  Sirianni spoke at a news conference on Monday morning and was wearing a black Starkville Yellow Jackets football jersey.  It was the jersey of Eagles Wide Receiver A.J. Brown; and

WHEREAS, after the win, Brown was asked by a reporter what it means to represent Mississippi as a Super Bowl Champion.  "That hasn't really set in yet," he said.  "I know my city is so proud of me.  I'm proud to be a Mississippian.  Blue-collar state, you have to grind for what you want.  I'm happy that I'm from there because it taught me a lot."  Brown was a four-star wide receiver at Starkville and played three seasons at Ole Miss; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize a Mississippi sports icon who has brought honor on a national stage to his community, his university and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby extend the congratulations of the Mississippi Senate to Philadelphia Eagles, former Ole Miss Rebels and former Starkville High School Yellow Jackets Wide Receiver A.J. Brown for his outstanding 2025 Superbowl Championship performance, and convey to A.J. and his family our best wishes for future success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Eagles Wide Receiver A.J. Brown, forwarded to the President of the Philadelphia Eagles, the Ole Miss Athletic Director and the Superintendent of the Starkville Oktibbeha County School District, and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
