A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE WEST POINT HIGH SCHOOL GREEN WAVE FOOTBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH BRETT MORGAN FOR WINNING THEIR 13TH STATE RECORD MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION CLASS 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, Shamane Clark was tough to stop. The West Point running back found open gaps and broke any tackles in his way. The senior knew in his final game, he had to step up. Clark had 168 rushing yards with three touchdowns on 26 carries en route to West Point's 28-21 win over Gautier to win the MHSAA Class 5A State Title on December 6, 2024; and

WHEREAS, the Green Wave claimed their 13th state title, now the most in MHSAA; and

WHEREAS, "It feels great," West Point Coach Brett Morgan said. "It's great for our community. This is what's expected at West Point. The bar is set high. We expected to be here, and we were able to do that"; and

WHEREAS, West Point finished with 265 rushing yards on 46 carries, four touchdowns, and 6-for-6 on passing for 74 passing yards; and

WHEREAS, "He's just a West Point football player," Morgan said of Clark. "...I couldn't be prouder for him. He is the example and the epitome of what this program's about"; and

WHEREAS, the Green Wave was down 7-0 to begin the Class 5A title game but scored 21 unanswered points to jump out to a 21-7 lead entering halftime. West Point extended its lead to 28-14, but Gautier scored a touchdown with 24 seconds remaining in the game; and

WHEREAS, Gautier quarterback and Class 5A Mr. Football Winner Trey Irving finished with 229 passing yards, 89 rushing and one touchdown; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize these student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the West Point High School Green Wave Football Team and Head Coach Brett Morgan for winning the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A State Championship and extend to the team, coaches, administration, parents and sponsors our best wishes for future success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Brett Morgan for the team, forwarded to West Point Principal Tameka Shannon and the West Point Municipal School Board of Trustees and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
