A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE WEST POINT HIGH SCHOOL GREEN WAVE FOOTBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH BRETT MORGAN UPON WINNING THE MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION (MHSAA) CLASS 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AND FOR SECURING THEIR RECORD 13TH STATE TITLE.

     WHEREAS, the West Point High School Green Wave Football Team has once again solidified its legacy in Mississippi high school football history by winning the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 5A State Championship with a hard-fought 28-21 victory over Gautier High School on Friday, December 6, 2024, at M.M. Roberts Stadium on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg; and

     WHEREAS, with this victory, West Point High School has now captured its 13th state championship, the most in Mississippi high school football history, surpassing Louisville High School's previous mark, further establishing the Green Wave's dominance and tradition of excellence; and

     WHEREAS, under the leadership of first-year Head Coach Brett Morgan, who previously served as the team's offensive coordinator, the Green Wave continued its storied success by implementing its time-tested strategy of a formidable rushing attack, which overwhelmed their opponents and proved instrumental in securing the title; and

     WHEREAS, the Green Wave's powerful running game, led by senior standout running back Shamane Clark, was the driving force behind their championship performance, as Clark amassed 168 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries, earning him the well-deserved title of Most Valuable Player; and

     WHEREAS, the team's tenacity and discipline were on full display, as they overcame an early deficit, scoring 21 unanswered points and maintaining control of the game through superior execution and clock management, ultimately finishing the game with an impressive 265 rushing yards on 46 carries and four touchdowns; and

     WHEREAS, West Point's defensive resilience and strategic game planning were equally crucial, as they held Gautier's high-powered offense in check for most of the game, forcing key turnovers and making critical stops to prevent a comeback; and

     WHEREAS, this championship not only highlights the talent and dedication of the players but also speaks to the unwavering commitment of Coach Morgan and his coaching staff, who have instilled in their team the values of hard work, perseverance and teamwork, which have been hallmarks of the Green Wave program for decades; and

     WHEREAS, the team's historic achievement is a testament to the support and pride of the West Point community, whose encouragement and unwavering belief in their team continue to inspire success on and off the field; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend outstanding achievements by student-athletes who bring honor to their schools, their communities and the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the West Point High School Green Wave Football Team and Head Coach Brett Morgan upon winning the 2024 MHSAA Class 5A State Championship and securing their record-breaking 13th state title, and extend to them best wishes for continued success in all their future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to West Point High School Head Coach Brett Morgan, the superintendent of the West Point Consolidated School District and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
