A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING COACH GREGG PERRY OF GERMANTOWN HIGH SCHOOL UPON BEING SELECTED THE 2023-2024 MISSISSIPPI ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATOR OF THE YEAR FOR CLASSES 5A-7A.
WHEREAS, Mr. Gregg Perry, who serves as the athletic director for Germantown High School, is being celebrated and honored upon being named the 2023-2024 Mississippi Athletic Administrator of the Year for Classes 5A-7A; and
WHEREAS, this prestigious award, which is given by the Mississippi High School Activities Association, was won by Coach Perry due to his outstanding demonstration of exceptional leadership and care for his students and coaches; and
WHEREAS, Coach Perry, who is a 1996 Belhaven College graduate and an East Central Community College graduate, where he played baseball and golf, is in his 29th year in education and is in his 14th year at Germantown High School, with four of those years being served in the capacity as the athletic director of the Mavericks, where he has made immense contributions and has taken the athletic program to new heights; and
WHEREAS, during his nearly 30 years in education, Coach Perry previously coached at Madison Central High School for 10 years as head baseball coach, two years at Winona High School as head baseball coach and assistant football coach and three years before that he served as the pitching coach at Madison Central; and
WHEREAS, notably, while at Madison Central, Coach Perry's baseball teams won nine district championships, five North state championships and two state championships, and he was named the Jackson Metro Coach of the Year in 2002 and 2009 and was selected to coach the Mississippi High School All-Star Game in 2005 and he compiled an impressive coaching record of 322 wins and 81 losses in his enviable career as head baseball coach; and
WHEREAS, upon Coach Perry's arrival to Germantown High School, he used his God-given talents to coach golf, football and baseball, which speaks to the breadth of talents, which has wonderfully contributed to the Mavericks success, and during his tenure as athletic director, additional sports such as bass fishing have been added to Germantown's number of athletic programs, which speaks to the coach's innovative spirit; and
WHEREAS, additionally, Germantown's men's golf teams won five state championships in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019, and were district champions from 2012 through 2019, and the women's golf teams won the Class II state championship in 2015, 2017 and 2018, and his team won the first ever 5A state championship for girls golf and they also won six straight district championships from 2014 through 2019; and
WHEREAS, Coach Perry, who is no stranger to receiving well deserved accolades, was chosen as Coach of the Year by the Mississippi Association of Coaches and the Clarion Ledger in 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019 and in 2015, 2018 and 2019 he was selected Mississippi Preps Coach of the Year; and
WHEREAS, in 2015 and 2016, Coach Perry was selected as the National Federation of High School Coaches Coach of the Year for the State of Mississippi, and in 2023, he was inducted into the Crossroad Diamond Club Hall of Fame due to his significant contributions to the sport of baseball; and
WHEREAS, Coach Perry has been lovingly supported throughout his endeavors by his lovely wife, Diann, and their son, Matthew, who has followed in his father's footsteps as he is the head coach of golf at East Central Community College; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the Mississippi House of Representatives to honor outstanding individuals such as Coach Gregg Perry whose contributions as an athletic administrator has not only brought great honor to Germantown High School's administration, faculty, staff, students and student-athletes as well as its supporters but his contributions also serve as an outstanding role model for other athletic administrators across the Magnolia State:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Coach Gregg Perry upon being named the 2023-2024 Athletic Administrator of the Year for Classes 5A-7A by the Mississippi High School Activities Association, and we wish him continued success in all his future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Coach Gregg Perry, Germantown High School and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
