A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING SHERYL WEST UPON BEING NAMED THE 2023 STATE GAMES OF MISSISSIPPI FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR.

     WHEREAS, Sheryl West, a cycler from Hickory, Mississippi, has been named the 2023 State Games of Mississippi Female Athlete of the Year, a truly exceptional accomplishment; and

     WHEREAS, since 2014, Ms. West has competed in the State Games Trail Run, and this year she added cycling to her competition list, taking home the gold medal with a race time of 53:12 for the 13 mile course; and

     WHEREAS, outside of the State Games, Ms. West is no stranger to competitions, as she has competed in three triathlon sprints, three half marathons, the Scorpion Trail Run 25k twice, the Ivey Trek 12k Trail Run twice, and numerous other 5k and 10k races; and

     WHEREAS, Ms. West also enjoys biking, swimming, or running five or six times a week to help maintain physical and mental well-being; and

     WHEREAS, Ms. West hopes to compete in the Singing Brakeman 62 mile Century Ride, and as far as her State Games goals, she hopes to add the Master Swimming competition to the list of State Games events while also competing in the Trail Run and Cycling events in 2024; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize extraordinary Mississippians, especially those such as Sheryl West, whose hard work and dedication to the sport of cycling and general athleticism brings honor to her community, and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby recognize and commend Sheryl West upon being named the 2023 State Games of Mississippi Female Athlete of the Year, and express our most sincere wishes for continued success in all her future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Sheryl West and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
