House Resolution 37

A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING AMESHYA WILLIAMS-HOLLIDAY FOR HER OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS, AND FOR BEING THE FIRST MISSISSIPPI HBCU PLAYER DRAFTED BY THE WNBA.

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Ameshya Williams-Holliday, of Gulfport, Mississippi, is the first Mississippi HBCU player drafted by the WNBA, a truly outstanding accomplishment; and

     WHEREAS, in 2022, the Indiana Fever selected Mrs. Williams-Holliday 25th overall (1st pick in 3rd round), which made her the second highest drafted HBCU player in league history, the first HBCU player selected in the WNBA since 2002, and the sixth player from an HBCU selected in the history of the league; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Williams-Holliday is a three-time, first-team All-SWAC selection (2020, 2021, 2022), a three-time league Defensive Player of the Year (2020, 2021, 2022), and in 2022, became the first SWAC player since 2019 to win both SWAC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors in the same season; and

     WHEREAS, a true inspiration, Mrs. Williams-Holliday remains connected to the game, and has been putting together basketball camps and is head coach for a youth team for girls basketball; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and honor extraordinary Mississippi athletes, especially those such as Mrs. Ameshya Williams-Holliday, whose hard work, dedication, and service brings honor to Jackson State University and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby recognize and commend Mrs. Ameshya Williams-Holliday for her outstanding achievements, and for being the first Mississippi HBCU player drafted by the WNBA, and extend best wishes to her for continued success in all her future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mrs. Ameshya Williams-Holliday, and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
