A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION HONORING THE LEGACY OF DECORATED WORLD WAR II CORPORAL L.C. JACKSON, 3449TH QUARTERMASTER TRUCK COMPANY, UNITED STATES ARMY, OF BROOKHAVEN, MISSISSIPPI, ON THE OCCASION OF HIS 100TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION.
WHEREAS, World War II Veteran L.C. Jackson was born on March 8, 1923, in Minter City, Mississippi, and will celebrate his 100th Birthday on March 8, 2023, with family and friends; and
WHEREAS, at the time when the world would ask ordinary men to do extraordinary things, Mr. Jackson selflessly answered the call to duty as a member of the Greatest Generation. L.C. served during a time when the military was still segregated; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Jackson is the fourth of seven children of George and Caroline Jackson. He attended school in Glendora, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Jackson was inducted into the United States Army in 1942 at Camp Shelby, Mississippi. He received his basic training at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania, as a truck driver. Mr. Jackson was then sent overseas to the Philippines, Okinawa and Japan. Corporal Jackson received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, the Army of Occupation Ribbon, the Japan Victory Ribbon, two Overseas Service Bars, a Rifle Marksmanship Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, on November 25, 1946, and returned to Glendora, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, L.C. then moved to Chicago, Illinois, where he met Bernice and the couple had three children. Mr. Jackson was employed with Greyhound Bus for two years and 31 years with the U.S. Post Office. He moved to Brookhaven, Mississippi, and was employed for two years at Brookhaven Sanitation Department. Mr. Jackson met Maxine in 1977 and they married in 1980; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Jackson is a Deacon at Hopewell Baptist Church in Brookhaven, Mississippi, and he will celebrate his 100th Birthday with his children, Ruben Jackson, Caroline Jackson and Bobby Dixon; and
WHEREAS, Colonel Jackson is a true American hero. He was a trailblazer who dared to be in the service during a time when African Americans were excluded from certain branches of service and occupations. Those servicemen should not be forgotten, and everyone should honor their sacrifice, and for this a grateful state thanks him for a life of selfless service and a legacy of a strong and free America:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby honor the legacy of decorated World War II Corporal L.C. Jackson, 3449th Quartermaster Truck Company, United States Army, of Brookhaven, Mississippi, extend the best wishes of the Legislature on his 100th Birthday, and extend to Mr. Jackson and his family the thanks of a grateful state.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Corporal Jackson and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
