House Resolution 163

A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING HEAD COACH KELVIN CARTER FOR HIS OUTSTANDING 2022-2023 SEASON AS HEAD COACH OF THE VICKSBURG HIGH SCHOOL GATORS BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM.

WHEREAS, Coach Kelvin Carter, head coach for the Vicksburg High School Gators Boys Basketball Team, achieved numerous milestones during his outstanding 2022-2023 season with the Gators; and

WHEREAS, after having a large graduating class in the

2021-2022 season, under Coach Carter's exceptional leadership, the Gators rebuilt stronger than ever for the 2022-2023 season, and took off like a rocket, blowing past their previous season's total of 12 wins by Christmas, winning their first 10 games, finishing with a 28-4 record that took them to a No. 1 ranking in Class 5A for most of the season, and winning the Region 4-5A regular-season title; and

WHEREAS, for his 100th career victory, Coach Carter led the Gators to a 73-60 win in their Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Region 3-5A opener over Callaway High School, a sweet victory that made a big statement as the first district game, as it was against perennial state power Callaway, whom Vicksburg has only beaten twice since the start of the 2010-2011 season, with the last victory being in 2019; and

WHEREAS, in addition to his 100th career victory, for his exceptional leadership, Coach Carter was selected as Vicksburg Daily News' 2022-2023 Boys Basketball Region 4-5A Head Coach of the Year, and was named the Vicksburg Post's Coach of the Year for 2023; and

WHEREAS, since joining Vicksburg High School to lead his alma mater's basketball program in 2017, Coach Carter has tremendously inspired each of his student-athletes to strive to achieve greatness on and off the court, and has continued a legacy of athletic excellence that will surely be remembered for years to come; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize outstanding Mississippi athletic leaders, especially those such as Coach Carter, whose dedication to his student-athletes brings honor to Vicksburg High School and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby recognize and commend Coach Kelvin Carter for his exceptional 2022-2023 season as head coach of the Vicksburg High School Gators Boys Basketball Team, and extend best wishes for continued success in all his future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Head Coach Kelvin Carter and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
