A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE JACKSON PREP "PATRIOTS" BASEBALL TEAM AND COACH BRENT HEAVENER FOR WINNING THE MAIS 5A STATE BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP FOR THE FOURTH CONSECUTIVE SEASON AND 20TH TIME IN PROGRAM HISTORY.
WHEREAS, for the fourth consecutive season and 20th time in program history, the Jackson Prep "Patriots" have won the MAIS 5A Baseball Championship; and
WHEREAS, the Patriots (35-3, 14-1) ensured their victory with a 5-1 win over Madison-Ridgeland Academy (27-11, 5-2) on May 12, 2021. Jackson Prep swept the best-of-three championship series in two games at its home field; and
WHEREAS, "It feels great," Jackson Prep Baseball Coach Brent Heavener said. "After last year with COVID and everything we dealt with and the seniors went through. Four in a row, I couldn't be more proud of them. These guys don't know how to lose." Jackson Prep had a 2-1 lead before Mississippi State signee Jeffrey Ince belted a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ince is one of two 2021 Clarion Ledger Baseball Dandy Dozens on the Prep roster next to Riley Maddox, who pitched a complete game one-hitter in the first game of the Championship Series; and
WHEREAS, the Patriots had eyes on their program all season, ranked as the No. 11 team in the nation by Perfect Game and No. 6 by the National High School Baseball Coaches Association; and
WHEREAS, the 2021 Patriots Championship Roster is: Rives Reynolds, Trey Bridges, Jeffrey Ince, Cy Craig, Thaxton Berch, Konnor Griffin, Clayton Grubbs, Eli Berch, Matthew Cochran, Will Gibbs, Ford McDaniel, Sam Watts, Owen Abney, Jack Gatlin, William Seymour, Jagger Mooneyham, Mason Nichols, Duncan Mathews, JK Nowell, Riley Maddox, Graham Busbea, Clark Kellum, Owen Ishee and Josh Stanford; Head Coach, Brent Heavener; Assistant Coaches, Marcus Canoy, JG Miley, Jay Powell and Zander Romano; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize these student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Jackson Prep "Patriots" Baseball Team and Coach Brent Heavener for winning the MAIS 5A State Baseball Championship for the fourth consecutive season and 20th time in program history, and extend to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for continued success.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Brent Heavener for the team, forwarded to Jackson Prep Head of School, Lawrence Coco, III, and the board of trustees and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
