House Bill 361

AN ACT TO AMEND SECTION 5-1-35, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, TO AUTHORIZE THE SERGEANTS AT ARMS OF THE SENATE AND HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TO CARRY A FIREARM; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  Section 5-1-35, Mississippi Code of 1972, is amended as follows:

     5-1-35.  The Sergeant at Arms of the Senate and the Sergeant at Arms of the House of Representatives shall give a general supervision, under the direction of the chamber's presiding officer.  * * *He Each Sergeant at Arms may carry a firearm and shall attend the sittings * * *thereof of that sergeant's house, preserve order, execute its commands and all process issued by its authority, and shall have control of the doorkeeper.  * * *He The Sergeant at Arms shall see that the halls of the Senate and House of Representatives and the committee rooms and the rooms of * * *its their presiding officers, the anterooms, lobbies and galleries * * *thereof, of their respective chambers are clean, comfortable and lighted at night during the sitting of the * * *Senate sergeant's house, and that all necessary conveniences are supplied to the members, officers and committees.

     SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2022.
