Senate Resolution 59

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE OLIVE BRANCH HIGH SCHOOL "LADY CONQUISTADORS" GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM AND COACH JASON THOMPSON FOR WINNING THEIR THIRD CONSECUTIVE MHSAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, the Olive Branch High School "Lady Quistors" Girls Basketball Team won its third straight Girls MHSAA State Championship on March 6, 2021, with a 66-62 win over Germantown at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson; and

WHEREAS, the "Lady Quistors" won back-to-back 6A State Titles, and their 2019 title was in Class 5A; and

WHEREAS, Junior Rhema Pegues was named player of the game after scoring 28 points and grabbing nine rebounds.  Olive Branch led by as many as nine in the first quarter, but only led by one heading into the second before carrying a five-point lead into halftime.  Pegues, who scored 11 in the first half, picked up where she left off in the third quarter.  She led a fast-paced Olive Branch offense that extended its lead to 12.  Olive Branch dealt with foul trouble as Pegues and Junior Addison Howell both picked up their fourth foul in the third quarter, which led to a quick Germantown run to cut the lead to five.  Olive Branch Coach Jason Thompson brought them back late in the third quarter, and the Lady Conquistadors ran their lead back out to double digits.  Germantown made a run late to cut it to one with less than one minute remaining, but it wasn't enough as Olive Branch hoisted their third consecutive Gold Ball under Thompson; and

WHEREAS, the 2021 Olive Branch High School "Lady Quistors" roster is:  DeAsia Jeffries, F, F; Alaiah Richmond, F; Brynea Eason, W; Kylah Richmond, SF; Addison Howell, SG; Trinity Pleas, W; Alyssa Brown; Abagail Cumber, W; Amya Black, G; Zoe Millbrooks, PF; Ariel McKinney; Rhema Pegues, G; and Dorothy Sinegar; and Head Coach Jason Thompson; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize these student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Olive Branch High School "Lady Conquistadors" Girls Basketball Team and Coach Jason Thompson for winning their third consecutive MHSAA State Championship, and extend to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for a fourth consecutive state championship.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Jason Thompson and Olive Branch Principal Jason Stripling for the team, forwarded to the DeSoto County Board of Education and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
