A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE JACKSON STATE UNIVERSITY "TIGERS" MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH WAYNE BRENT FOR WINNING THE CO-SWAC 2021 REGULAR SEASON CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, Jackson State University "Tigers" Men's Basketball Team finished the season undefeated in SWAC play with a 79-54 win over Alabama State on March 7, 2021, to claim the Co-SWAC 2021 Regular Season Championship. The win gave eighth-year Coach Wayne Brent his first SWAC Regular Season Title; and
WHEREAS, Jackson State led for nearly 36 minutes of action in the contest, jumping out to a first half lead of 43-26 at the break. In the second half, Jackson State led by its largest lead of the night by 25 points with just under three minutes left in the contest. Jackson State went on to defeat Alabama State by a convincing 79-54 win in the regular season finale; and
WHEREAS, Tristan Jarrett led the Tigers with 22 points. Jonas James added 17 points and six rebounds, while Cainan McClelland had 12 points and five steals. Another Senior, Darrian Wilson, tallied 11 points and drained 3-of-4 from three-point range. With the win, JSU improved to 11-5 overall on the season and a perfect 11-0 in SWAC play. The Tigers will head to Birmingham, Alabama, where SWAC Tournament competition will begin; and
WHEREAS, the JSU Women's Basketball Team won the Southwestern Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship on the same day the JSU Men's Basketball Team won the SWAC Regular Season Championship, which was a great day for Jackson State, great day for the city, great day from the alumni, the student body and the support staff; and
WHEREAS, the 2021 SWAC Regular Season Tigers Roster is: Demarion Bariffe-Smith, Darius Hicks, Ken Evans, Jonas James, Tristan Jarrett, Cainan McClelland, Jayveous McKinnis, Darrian Wilson, Kelvin Wesley, Wesley Taylor, Hezekiah Quinlan, Charles Dismuke, Kesaiah Parks, Isaiah Williams, Michael Tate, Jr., Larry Kuimi, Jalani Bell, Darryl Jordan and Geronimo Warner; Head Coach Wayne Brent and Assistant Coaches Cason Burk, De'Suan Dixon and Christopher Woodall; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this group of athletes who have brought honor to their university, their community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Jackson State University "Tigers" Men's Basketball Team and Head Coach Wayne Brent for winning the Co-SWAC 2021 Regular Season Championship, and extend to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for success in SWAC tournament play and in their future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Wayne Brent and JSU President Thomas Hudson, forwarded to the Board of Trustees of Institutions of Higher Learning and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
