A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE FLORENCE HIGH SCHOOL "LADY EAGLES" GIRLS SOCCER TEAM AND COACH BILL HOOD FOR WINNING THE MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION CLASS 4A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, Madison Carroll scored off a deflection in the first minute of golden goal overtime to lift Florence High School over West Lauderdale High School 3-2 to claim the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 4A Girls State Soccer Championship on February 6, 2021, at Madison Central High School; and
WHEREAS, it was the "Lady Eagles" (18-2-1) fifth state title in school history and first state title since 2018; and
WHEREAS, the Championship game was the fourth-straight meeting between the two teams in the championship round. Florence defeated West Lauderdale 3-2 in golden goal overtime in 2018. The Lady Knights had defeated Florence the last two seasons for the 4A state title; and
WHEREAS, after the game remained tied after the second 10-minute overtime, Carroll was in the right place at the right time. Florence took the opening kickoff of the first golden goal overtime and the ball eventually found Carroll standing just outside the back post. Her shot went into the far corner of the net to win the game for the Lady Eagles. "Madison Carroll scored the tying goal in the 2018 title game and scored two in this one as a senior, but I couldn't be more proud," Coach Bill Hood said; and
WHEREAS, the Lady Eagles 2021 State Soccer Championship Roster is: Skyla Yount; Meagan Spencer; Addie Grace Barnard; Madeline Edwards; Kailee Lilley; Christina Guzman; Jessie Heflin; Kylee Cloer; Olivia Burnham; Morgan Phillips; Rylee Raymond; Sydney O'Hair; Madison Carroll; Leslie Carroll; Caroline Sanford; Mary Elise Taylor; Rachel Parr; Kamryn Frazier; Shaelynn Quick; Breeanna Goza; Bill Hood, Head Coach; and Joshua Cavanaugh, Assistant Coach; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize a group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Florence High School "Lady Eagles" Girls Soccer Team and Coach Bill Hood for winning the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 4A State Championship, and extend to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for future success.
be it further resolved, that this resolution be presented to Head Coach Bill Hood and Florence High School Principal Tony Martin, forwarded to the Rankin County Board of Education and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
