A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION DECLARING THAT MARCH 21, 2021, IS "WORLD DOWN SYNDROME DAY IN MISSISSIPPI" TO ENCOURAGE AWARENESS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DOWN SYNDROME.
WHEREAS, one in every 700 babies is born with Down syndrome, representing approximately 6,000 births per year in the United States; and
WHEREAS, the National Down Syndrome Society, the leading human rights organization for all individuals with Down syndrome, envisions a world in which all people with Down syndrome have the opportunity to enhance their equality of life, realize their life aspirations and become valued members of welcoming communities; and
WHEREAS, recent advancements in Down syndrome research have proven that early intervention, education, social support, therapeutic care and positive public attitudes improve each individual's chances of living an independent, productive and satisfying life; and
WHEREAS, individuals with Down syndrome should have equal opportunity to achieve the universally desired goals of self-fulfillment, pride in their achievements, inclusion in their community and reach their fullest potential; and
WHEREAS, in recent years, many federal statutes have given an increasing amount of discretion to the states to ensure that policies are implemented in the best interests of individuals with intellectual disabilities and advocacy work at the state level is critical:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we hereby declare that March 21, 2021, is "World Down Syndrome Day in Mississippi" to encourage awareness and opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome.
be it further resolved, that this resolution be forwarded to the National Down Syndrome Society, the Mississippi Coalition for Individuals with Disabilities and the Mississippi Department of Mental Health for appropriate distribution and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
