House Resolution 30

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING LEIGHTON JENKINS FOR BEING SELECTED AS THE 2020 STATE GAMES OF MISSISSIPPI OVERALL YOUTH ATHLETE OF THE YEAR.

WHEREAS, Leighton Jenkins is the 2020 State Games of Mississippi Overall Youth Athlete of the Year; and

WHEREAS, Youth Athlete of the Year Leighton Jenkins of Meridian started playing in the State Games when he was seven (in soccer) but baseball has always been his favorite sport, and this All-Star shortstop is a senior at West Lauderdale High School and trains under Coach Jason Smith, winning Defensive Player of the Year in his junior year and committed to play baseball at East Central Community College when he starts college in 2021; and

WHEREAS, during the 2020 State Games tournament, Leighton went 8 for 16, with a homerun, a triple, two doubles, four singles and eight runs batted in; and

WHEREAS, Leighton is not only athletic, but smart, and is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Society of High School Scholars; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend outstanding Mississippians, especially those such as Leighton Jenkins, who is an excellent role model for a balanced and healthy lifestyle, bringing honor to his community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Leighton Jenkins on being selected as the 2020 State Games of Mississippi Overall Youth Athlete of the Year, and extend best wishes for continued success in all of his future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Leighton Jenkins and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
