House Resolution 27

A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING MRS. IDA PEARL PEAVIE MINOR FOR HER CAREER OF MANY DECADES AS AN ESTEEMED EDUCATOR IN HAZLEHURST, MISSISSIPPI, AND IMPORTANT WORK WITH THE MISSISSIPPI DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION.

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Ida Pearl Peavie Minor has dedicated her life to serving Hazlehurst, Mississippi, and the State of Mississippi in numerous roles as an esteemed educator, and she continues leaving a lasting legacy of excellence even still today after many decades of service; and

     WHEREAS, Ida Pearl Peavie Minor was born in Walnut Grove, Mississippi, in Leake County to the late F.C. and Mary Lou Peavie as the second of five children, and graduated from Murphy High School; and

     WHEREAS, she earned a bachelor of science in biology from Mississippi Valley State University, a master of science in biology from Southern University in Baton Rouge, an education specialist in science education from Jackson State University and performed further education studies at Alcorn State University and the University of Missouri; and

     WHEREAS, she taught for 38 years in the Hazlehurst City School District, teaching biology, chemistry, mathematics, general science, earth and space science and anatomy and physiology; and

     WHEREAS, during her 38 years of teaching, she served as Science Department Chairperson, Science Club Sponsor and Coordinator of the Science Fair; and

     WHEREAS, after retirement, she worked as a contract worker with the Mississippi Department of Education in Jackson, Mississippi, where she served as a school evaluator, member of the School Improvement/School Support Team and read proposals for the department; and

     WHEREAS, her community involvement includes serving as a member of the Board of the Hazlehurst City Library, the Boys and Girls Club Board and as Chairperson of the Board of Commissioners of the Hazlehurst Housing Authority for over 25 years; and

     WHEREAS, her recognitions included Program Center Coordinators Award for Mississippi's Commissioner of the Year from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, vice-president of Commissioners for the State of Mississippi, and two-time Star Teacher and Teacher of the Year for the Hazlehurst City School District; and

     WHEREAS, she was married to the late Marvin Minor with whom she had two children, Marvin Fitzgerald Minor (wife, Lashay Minor) and Marva Felicia Minor; four grandchildren, Jaiden Carlies Evans, Lance Arnold, Maya Arnold and Shaylon Arnold; godchildren, Brandi Danielle Smith and Randy Kristopher Smith; and she is a member of Greater Damascus Church of Christ Holiness, U.S.A.; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend outstanding Mississippians, especially those such as Mrs. Ida Minor, whose dedication and commitment to the education of the youth of our state, which is vital to its future, bring honor to the Hazlehurst and Jackson communities and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend Mrs. Ida Pearl Peavie Minor for her career of many decades as an esteemed educator in Hazlehurst, Mississippi, and important work with the Mississippi Department of Education, and extend most sincere wishes for continued success in all of her future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mrs. Ida Pearl Peavie Minor and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
