A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE DISTINGUISHED CAREER OF COACH GENE MURPHY UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT AS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR OF HINDS COMMUNITY COLLEGE.
WHEREAS, Coach Gene Murphy has announced his retirement as athletic director effective February 28, 2021, after dedicating numerous years of illustrious service and extraordinary leadership to Hinds Community College; and
WHEREAS, Hinds Community College President Dr. Stephen Vacik stated, "Coach Murphy has been an integral part of the Hinds Community College family and has had a far-reaching influence on athletes that is immeasurable."; and
WHEREAS, Coach Murphy served two successful stints as head football coach, the first time from 1987 to 2003 and the second time from 2009 to August 2017; and
WHEREAS, with his outstanding leadership abilities, Coach Murphy received the great honor of being named athletic director in July 1997, and he valiantly served in that esteemed position until his imminent retirement; and
WHEREAS, a reflection of his enduring legacy, in the fall of 2017, the field at Joe Renfroe Stadium on the Raymond Campus was named Gene Murphy Field in his honor; and
WHEREAS, Coach Murphy, whose coaching record included a remarkable four consecutive state championships, has exemplified phenomenal professionalism, ability and integrity, earning the unbridled respect and admiration of all those he encountered, coached and led in his long, successful career; and
WHEREAS, Coach Murphy will be dearly missed by all of his colleagues and others who were fortunate to have the opportunity to work with him; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to pay tribute to great Mississippians, especially those such as Coach Gene Murphy, whose outstanding leadership will always be remembered:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the distinguished and meritorious career of Coach Gene Murphy upon the occasion of his retirement, and extend best wishes for success in his lighter days ahead.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Coach Gene Murphy and to the members of the Capital Press Corps.
