A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING EACH MISSISSIPPI ELECTRIC POWER ASSOCIATION, INCLUDING ALCORN COUNTY EPA, CENTRAL EPA, COAHOMA EPA, COAST EPA, DELTA EPA, DIXIE EPA, EAST MISSISSIPPI EPA, 4-COUNTY EPA, MAGNOLIA ELECTRIC POWER, MONROE COUNTY EPA, NATCHEZ TRACE EPA, NORTH EAST MISSISSIPPI EPA, NORTHCENTRAL ELECTRIC, PEARL RIVER VALLEY EPA, PONTOTOC EPA, PRENTISS COUNTY EPA, SINGING RIVER ELECTRIC, SOUTHERN PINE ELECTRIC, SOUTHWEST ELECTRIC, TALLAHATCHIE VALLEY EPA, TIPPAH EPA, TISHOMINGO COUNTY EPA, TOMBIGBEE EPA, TWIN COUNTY EPA AND YAZOO VALLEY EPA, FOR THEIR TIRELESS EFFORTS IN ENSURING THAT POWER WAS RESTORED AFTER THE WINTER STORM IN FEBRUARY 2021.

     WHEREAS, beginning on February 14, 2021, the State of Mississippi was terrorized by a winter storm that dumped sleet, snow and freezing rain on much of the South, causing widespread power outages and dangerous driving conditions; and

     WHEREAS, the Mississippi Electric Power Associations (EPA), including Alcorn County EPA, Central EPA, Coahoma EPA, Coast EPA, Delta EPA, Dixie EPA, East Mississippi EPA, 4-County EPA, Magnolia Electric Power, Monroe County EPA, Natchez Trace EPA, North East Mississippi EPA, Northcentral Electric, Pearl River Valley EPA, Pontotoc EPA, Prentiss County EPA, Singing River Electric, Southern Pine Electric, Southwest Electric, Tallahatchie Valley EPA, Tippah EPA, Tishomingo County EPA, Tombigbee EPA, Twin County EPA and Yazoo Valley EPA, demonstrated untiring commitment, diligence and service to its customer base, as well as the state as a whole, by restoring power in an efficient and prompt manner after the winter storm; and

     WHEREAS, the snow and ice remained firmly on the streets and in the trees for a week and the total power outage count across the state had skyrocketed to nearly 200,000 customers; and

     WHEREAS, despite the frigid temperatures and slick roads, the electric power associations, utility companies and emergency service crews remained in a race against time to restore power to residents as temperatures remained at dangerous lows; and

     WHEREAS, each of the electric power associations in Mississippi, including the Alcorn County EPA, Central EPA, Coahoma EPA, Coast EPA, Delta EPA, Dixie EPA, East Mississippi EPA, 4-County EPA, Magnolia Electric Power, Monroe County EPA, Natchez Trace EPA, North East Mississippi EPA, Northcentral Electric, Pearl River Valley EPA, Pontotoc EPA, Prentiss County EPA, Singing River Electric, Southern Pine Electric, Southwest Electric, Tallahatchie Valley EPA, Tippah EPA, Tishomingo County EPA, Tombigbee EPA, Twin County EPA and Yazoo Valley EPA, went above and beyond their call of duty to ensure that Mississippi residents had their power restored as quickly as possible; and  

     WHEREAS, the citizens of Mississippi will never forget the immediate response and continued dedication of the Mississippi Electric Power Associations following this great winter storm which befell our state, and these extraordinary individuals that comprise each Mississippi Electric Power Association merit a special measure of commendation for their commitment to the people of Mississippi in our time of need; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to commend the Mississippi Electric Power Associations for their excellent work in restoring power to the citizens of Mississippi during such a trying time in this great state's history:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend each Mississippi Electric Power Association, including Alcorn County EPA, Central EPA, Coahoma EPA, Coast EPA, Delta EPA, Dixie EPA, East Mississippi EPA, 4-County EPA, Magnolia Electric Power, Monroe County EPA, Natchez Trace EPA, North East Mississippi EPA, Northcentral Electric, Pearl River Valley EPA, Pontotoc EPA, Prentiss County EPA, Singing River Electric, Southern Pine Electric, Southwest Electric, Tallahatchie Valley EPA, Tippah EPA, Tishomingo County EPA, Tombigbee EPA, Twin County EPA and Yazoo Valley EPA, for their tireless efforts in ensuring that power was restored after the winter storm in February 2021 and express appreciation to these associations for their remarkable assistance to their fellow citizens in a historic time of need.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to each electric power association and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
