AN ACT TO REQUIRE POLICE OFFICERS TO MAINTAIN LIABILITY INSURANCE; TO REQUIRE THE MUNICIPALITY, AUTHORITY, AGENCY OR OTHER POLITICAL SUBDIVISION TO COVER THE BASE RATE OF THE POLICY; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  Each police officer employed by a municipality, authority, agency or other political subdivision shall obtain a policy of liability insurance.  Each appointed police officer must provide proof of liability insurance coverage required by this section and must maintain continuous coverage throughout the course of employment as a police officer.  Such insurance shall cover claims against such officer for acts or omissions during any period of time that such officer is performing duties within the scope of employment of such municipality, authority, agency or other political subdivision.  The municipality, authority, agency or other political subdivision shall cover the base rate of the policy required by this section.

     SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2021.
