A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE LAFAYETTE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL "LADY DORES" GIRLS SOCCER TEAM AND HEAD COACH MELINDA SCRUGGS FOR WINNING THEIR SECOND CONSECUTIVE MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION CLASS 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AND THIRD OVERALL CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, Caroline Perkins #24 received a pass from Kateline Johnson #18 and scored the eventual game-winning goal with 26 minutes remaining to lift Lafayette County High School past East Central High School 2-1 to claim the program's second consecutive Mississippi High School Activities Association Girls Class 5A State Championship at Brandon High School's Bulldog Stadium on February 8, 2020.  It was the Lady Commodores' Third State Title overall; and

WHEREAS, "I'm so proud of the fact that the girls were able to rise to the occasion," Lafayette Coach Melinda Scruggs said.  "We made a couple of adjustments at halftime and told the girls they had to dig deep for 40 minutes and they did"; and

WHEREAS, Lafayette scored the first 10 minutes into the game when Leslie Perkins scored off a pass from Hudson Lindsay to give the Lady Commodores a 1-0 lead.  East Central tied the game at 1-1 ten minutes later on a shot by Alexis Cochran.  In the second half, Lafayette controlled possession of the ball and held East Central to two shots on goal in the second half and three for the entire game.  When Johnson got the ball at the top of the 18-yard mark, her pass got over the East Central goalkeeper's hands and Perkins was there to finish; and
