A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND CONGRATULATING JACKSON STATE UNIVERSITY VIRAL STAR THOMAS "SNACKS" LEE FOR WINNING THE ESPY AWARD FOR THE "CAN'T-STOP-WATCHING-MOMENT OF THE YEAR."
WHEREAS, Thomas "Snacks" Lee brought home an ESPY Award to his hometown on June 21, 2020, winning the 2020 "Can't-Stop-Watching-Moment of the Year ESPY Award" presented by Capital One; and
WHEREAS, Snacks took home the top spot for the award by earning the top vote against finalists Riley Sartain-Vaughan, Newtown High School Football Team, and Obed Lekhehle after winning 79% of twitter polls and winning ESPN's online voting process. He also defeated No. 1 seeded Olympic Superstar and two-time ESPY Award Winner Simone Biles in the elite eight as he advanced past Biles' world record-setting moment; and
WHEREAS, Lee, a Student Manager and former Provine High School student, has worked with the JSU Men's Basketball Team for four years. He was able to dress out for senior night and was honored before the game for his dedication and hard work with the team. He wore #35 for his favorite basketball player, Kevin Durant, and was put in the game with two minutes left on the clock. When asked how it felt to make this epic shot, Snacks said, "Kevin Durant has always been my favorite player. It made me feel like the 'Easy Money (3-point) Sniper' when I made it." Kevin Durant saw the viral three-pointer and tweeted in response to it. Toward the end of their final game of the season, the crowd began roaring "WE WANT SNACKS"; and
WHEREAS, this ESPY Award only added to the list of accolades and news outlets that Snacks has been a part of over the last three and one-half months. The ESPY Award marks the first-ever ESPY to be awarded to Jackson State University as well as to the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). After winning the 2020 Can't-Stop-Watching-Moment of the Year ESPY Award and capturing the hearts of America, it only took three words to describe the moment for the hometown hero, "Humble never Hollywood." Staying humble is exactly how the viral sensation has handled this whole process ever since he made his 35-plus foot three-point shot on senior night. His story has impacted many viewers across the globe that have heard his story and seen "Three Shot." In a matter of one week, the Jackson, Mississippi, native made appearances on nationally known media outlets such as The Morning Show with Hoda and Jenna, ESPN's College Gameday, TMZ Sports, The Athletic, The Washington Post, The Undefeated, "Pardon My Take" and ESPN. He was also featured on "Pardon The Interruption," The Dan Le Batard, and Around the Horn; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize a young Mississippi citizen who has brought honor to his community, his university and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize and congratulate Jackson State University Viral Star Thomas "Snacks" Lee for winning the ESPY Award for the "Can't-Stop-Watching-Moment of the Year," and extend to Snacks and his team members our best wishes for future successes.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to "Snacks" Lee and his family, forwarded to Jackson State University Acting President Thomas Hudson, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
