A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION JOINING THE FAITHFUL MEMBERS OF NEELY BAPTIST CHURCH IN GREENE COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI, IN CELEBRATING THE 175TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CHURCH.
WHEREAS, Neely Baptist Church in Greene County, Mississippi, will celebrate 175 years of service to the Lord at a Homecoming/Anniversary Celebration to take place on Sunday, March 29, 2020, a great day in the history of this faithful congregation; and
WHEREAS, the original Washington Baptist Church (1845-1913) now exists in the form of two separate churches: Washington Missionary Baptist Church and Neely Baptist Church; and
WHEREAS, to end confusion among the two churches, Washington (Convention) Baptist Church changed its name to Neely Baptist Church in July 1971; and
WHEREAS, in 1845, Washington Baptist Church was founded in Greene County, Mississippi. In 1845, the Southern Baptist Convention was also founded. Washington Baptist Church joined the Providence Baptist Association somewhere between 1855 and 1871, and remained a member until 1876; and
WHEREAS, Washington Baptist Church was a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Association from 1882-1890, the Leaf River Baptist Association from 1891-1920, the Greene County Baptist Association from 1921-2008, and the George-Greene Baptist Association from 2009-present; and
WHEREAS, on September 17, 1913, the church "mutually agreed to each call their own pastor and run as an independent body." From 1913-1971, both churches were known as Washington Baptist Church; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we honor the history and dedication of past congregations, ministers and staff of this church which is central to the faith of the citizens of Greene County:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby join the faithful members of Neely Baptist Church in Greene County, Mississippi, in celebrating the 175th Anniversary of the Church and extend our best wishes to the Pastor, members and staff of this congregation.
Be it further resolved, That this resolution be presented to Derrick Meadows, Chairman of the Deacons, on behalf of Neely Baptist Church, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
