House Concurrent Resolution 57

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION DECLARING THE MONTH OF APRIL 2020 AS "PARKINSON'S DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH."

     WHEREAS, Parkinson's disease is a chronic, progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects movement for which there is currently no cure; and

     WHEREAS, one million people in the United States are currently living with Parkinson's disease with approximately 60,000 new cases diagnosed each year, making Parkinson's disease the 14th leading cause of death in the United States according to the Centers for Disease Control; and

     WHEREAS, Rock Steady Boxing provides hope to people impacted by Parkinson's disease through a noncontact, boxing-based fitness curriculum, and Rock Steady Boxing is dedicated to the fight against Parkinson's; and

     WHEREAS, awareness of Parkinson's disease is desperately needed to help expedite the research efforts for better treatments, medications, and ultimately, a cure, and more enhanced programs and services are needed to help those affected by Parkinson's disease live life to the fullest until a cure is found; and

     WHEREAS, the world, the nation, and the State of Mississippi observe Parkinson's Disease Awareness Month in April 2020, and Mississippi recognizes the efforts of Rock Steady Boxing programs throughout the state to fight Parkinson's disease, thereby improving the quality of life for those living with the disease:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby declare the month of April 2020 as "Parkinson's Disease Awareness Month" to promote the education and awareness of Parkinson's disease.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
