A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION EXTENDING THE CONDOLENCES OF THE LEGISLATURE TO THE BEREAVED FAMILY OF REVEREND DR. TIMOTHY BURREL, SR., FORMER COAHOMA COUNTY SUPERVISOR, VETERAN, EDUCATOR, CHURCH LEADER, CIVIC LEADER AND DEVOTED FAMILY MENTOR.

     WHEREAS, we join the citizens of Coahoma County in mourning the passing of Reverend Dr. Timothy Burrel, Sr., former Coahoma County Supervisor, Veteran, Educator, Church Leader, Award-Winning Civic Leader, and devoted husband and father; and

     WHEREAS, Timothy was born on February 18, 1943, in Lyon, Mississippi, to Reverend George and Rosie Burrel, who preceded him in death.  In 1963, Timothy graduated from Coahoma Junior College.  Later that year, he enlisted in the United States Army until being honorably discharged on August 3, 1972.  He then served in the United States Reserve for more than 30 years before retiring on November 15, 1996.  His education continued with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education at Mississippi Valley State University in 1966.  Timothy received a Master's Degree in Media Science and a Specialist Degree in Administration and Supervision from The University of Mississippi in 1977.  He received a Doctorate in Divinity from Jacksonville Theological Seminary in May 2006; and

     WHEREAS, during his lengthy educational career, Timothy served as a Media Specialist, Teacher, Photographer and Principal.  Timothy served the community in various capacities as:  a Minister, member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., (where he was a fraternity brother of Senator Robert Jackson, District 11, and Representative Orlando Paden, District 26), 4th District Masonic Lodge, and a past member of Coahoma County Board of Supervisors; and

     WHEREAS, Timothy is preceded in death by three brothers:  William Burrel (Willie, deceased), George W. Burrel (Ossie, deceased) and Lewis Burrel, Sr. (Lorene).  Timothy is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Mary Clark Burrel; three children:  Timothy Burrel, Jr., Terrence D. Burrel, Sr., (Melissa), and Morika M. Burrel; six sisters:  Blanche Ray (Jimmy, deceased), Alsie Wilkins (John, deceased), Zola Hudson (Preston, deceased), Mildred Burris (Willie, deceased), Mary Collins (Levi) and Patricia Seals (Edward, Sr.); one brother, Leon Burrel; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a host of other relatives and friends; and

     WHEREAS, we pay tribute and cherish fondly the memory of this most public-spirited citizen of Mississippi whose enormous civic energy will be missed:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby extend condolences of the Mississippi Legislature to the bereaved family of Reverend Dr. Timothy Burrel, Sr., former Coahoma County Supervisor, Veteran, Educator, Church Leader, Civic Leader and devoted Family Mentor.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the surviving family of Reverend Dr. Burrel, forwarded to the Coahoma County Board of Supervisors, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
