Senate Concurrent Resolution 635

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE STARKVILLE HIGH SCHOOL "YELLOWJACKETS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND COACH GREG CARTER FOR WINNING THE MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION CLASS 6A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, with 15 seconds left in the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 6A Finals, Starkville senior players Tyler Talley, Terry Tate and Jamarrion Brown embraced at half court. Then time ran out and the Starkville players began to celebrate their 61-46 win over Meridian and splashed bottles of water on one another to celebrate the Starkville (30-1) Yellow Jackets' first State Title since 2015; and

WHEREAS, a year after a semifinal loss to eventual Champion Columbus, Terry Tate helped his team get the job done as a senior. He finished with twelve points and four rebounds. Zeke Cook led Starkville with fifteen points and nine rebounds and was named the 6A title game's Most Valuable Player; and

WHEREAS, Starkville's decisive run came in the final five minutes of the March 9, 2019, Championship Game. Offensively, Talley and Tate delivered key shots to spark Starkville's 19-6 run in the game's final five minutes. Coach Greg Carter said he really started to see a Championship quality in his team near the end of January. "After we continued to improve, I told my assistant coaches we could be a tough outcome February and March, and that's what happened," Carter said. "This team just kept getting better"; and

WHEREAS, the Starkville High School "Yellowjackets" Boys Basketball Team Roster is: Tyler Talley, Terry Tate, Forte Prater, Edzeric Cook, Trey Jackson, Coltie Young, Jamarrion Brown, Eric Green, Atavius Jones, Albert Plair, Jarmarvious Phillips, Keyvon Pearson, Cameron Skinner, Camron Petty, Fred Rice, Eliot McGrew, Leroy Hollingshed and Nyjal Johnson; Coaches: Greg Carter, Q'varius Howard and Edward Townsel; and Managers: Danny Ditta, Jeremiah Chandler, Jayveon Petty and Robert Rice; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Starkville High School "Yellowjackets" Boys Basketball Team and Coach Greg Carter for winning the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 6A State Championship and extend to the team members, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for future success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Greg Carter for the team, forwarded to Starkville Principal Sean McDonnall and the Starkville School Board, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
