A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION JOINING THE MISSISSIPPI BUSINESS JOURNAL IN RECOGNIZING MISSISSIPPI BOARD OF NURSING EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR PHYLLIS POLK JOHNSON AS THE "2019 BUSINESS WOMAN OF THE YEAR."
WHEREAS, Mississippi State Board of Nursing Phyllis Polk Johnson, Executive Director of the Mississippi Board of Nursing, was named Mississippi's "2019 Business Woman of the Year" on February 21, 2019, by the Mississippi Business Journal; and
WHEREAS, Phyllis Johnson was joined by 10 finalists and 39 other honorees at an event at the Old Capitol Inn in Downtown Jackson; and
WHEREAS, at the Mississippi Board of Nursing, Johnson is responsible for the oversight of approximately 68,000 nurses (Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses). Prior to this role, Phyllis was the Director of Advanced Practice and Licensure, where she was responsible for the regulation of licensure, compliance and discipline for the more than 5,000 Advanced Practice Nurses (Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Midwives and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists) in the state. She has held numerous clinical and managerial responsibilities in her more than 30 years of nursing. In 2013, Phyllis retired from the United States Navy Reserves at the rank of Commander. She is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., where she is active in the Jackson Mississippi Alumnae Chapter; and
WHEREAS, a native of Carthage, Phyllis attended South Leak High School in Walnut Grove, where she graduated as Salutatorian of her class. She received her Bachelor of Science (Cum Laude) and Master of Science Degrees from the Mississippi University for Women. Additional studies were completed at Jackson State University where she received her Master's Degree in Biology with an emphasis in Genetics and Molecular Biology; and
WHEREAS, Phyllis is known for her tireless work ethic and attributes her drive and desire to excel to her parents. She defines her culture for excellence as always striving to do and be the best. Married to Clinton Johnson, Jr., she is the mother of two sons, William and Trey, and one daughter, Katrina, and the grandmother of ten adoring grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, we join the business community in paying tribute to a most public-spirited citizen of Mississippi with enormous civic energy who is an example for all in our state:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby join the Mississippi Business Journal in recognizing Mississippi Board of Nursing Executive Director Phyllis Polk Johnson as the "2019 Business Woman of the Year," and extend to Phyllis and her family our best wishes for future success.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Phyllis Polk Johnson, forwarded to the Mississippi Board of Nursing and the Mississippi Business Journal, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
